IN PREVIOUS ISSUES

Blackbird publishes new issues twice a year. The notion of “issue” is both a nod to the print journal and a way for us to call attention to the new work of a limited number of writers. However, publishing online allows us keep all issues available for reading, listening, and viewing. On this page, we wish to point you toward some of the content you may have missed but which still lives in our Archives.

		Romulus Linney Blackbird notes with great sadness the death of Romulus Linney on January 15, 2011. Linney generously responded to our call for content for Blackbird v1n1, providing us with “Fugue,” a story in four voices that appeared in Gallery, and granting us an interview that appeared iin Features. His was a restive and piercing artistic intelligence, and we were grateful to have the opportunity to publish him.
		Norman Dubie Blackbird began publishing Norman Dubie’s book-length futurist poem, The Spirit Tablets at Goa Lake, with “Book of the Jewel Worm” in v1n2. The other two sections, “Book of the Jaspers” and “The Book of the Crying Kanglings,” appeared in v2n1 and v2n2 respectively. A master menu connects the sections across the three issues. Five poems by Dubie also appeared in v7n1.
		Dave Smith Dave Smith first appeared in Blackbird v2n2 with an essay entitled “Larry Levis: Johnny Dominguez, A Letter,” as a part of the Levis Remembered Reading Loop. Later, two poems, “The Clam-Rake Room” and “Warren’s Flowers,” were presented in v3n2 for Pivot Points, a collaboration of three-generations of poets and painters.
		Jennifer Chang Three poems “Estuary,” “Field Guide to the Night Sky,” and “Slept” appeared in the Spring 2006 issue, v5n1. In v8n1, Sandra Beasley reviewed Chang’s History of Anonymity and stated that “This book is populated with those defined not by name, but by archetype and intent” and “Given [its] seductive powers . . . we are inspired to reach out in return.”
		Victoria Chang Victoria Chang’s poetry has appeared in four previous issues of Blackbird: v3n2, v4n2, v6n2, v8n1. Four companion poems to this issue’s “Dear P., XXII”, are in v8n1, and the title poem from Chang’s second collection is featured in v4n2. Susan Settlemyre Williams reviews Chang’s two collections, Circle and Salvina Molesta, in v4n2 and v8n2 respectively, and notes that Chang “looks unsentimentally on the various entanglements of this world.”
		Adrian Dorris Adrian Dorris’s “1-800-BUTTERBOLLY,” from Blackbird v8n2, chronicles the workers in a turkey company’s outsourced, Indian callcenter on Thanksgiving day where the narrator’s boss instructs her to “Make Americans believe the meat is well and they are happy.”
		Kelly Cherry In v7n1, Kelly Cherry’s essay “The Achievement of George Garrett” investigates Garrett’s preoccupation with memory, autobiography, and fiction.
		Jehanne Dubrow Jehanne Dubrow’s poetry has appeared in issues v5n1 and v7n1. In reviewing Dubrow’s From the Fever-World in v9n2, Susan Settlemyre Williams writes that “Dubrow offers a fully formed and often harsh world of ritual, dailiness, loss, and sheer terror.” Two nonfiction pieces by Dubrow are published in v8n1, and her Tracking the Muse feature, “Notes Toward a Nonexistant Poet” are in v7n1.
		John Allman As a regular multi-genre contributor to Blackbird, John Allman’s poetry has appeared in v2n1 and v5n1 and his fiction in v4n1, v6n2, and v7n2. In a review of Allman’s chapbook, Low Country, in v5n2, Anna Journey writes that his “eye is sharp and his smart turn of phrase delights.”
