Paul Strand (1890–1976) was born in New York City, where he was introduced to photography as a high school student. He also worked in painting and film and, in visits to New Mexico, came to believe in the humanistic value of portraiture. Strand’s work helped establish photography as an art form, including subjects throughout Africa, the Americas, and Europe. He is famous for his photographic portraits.
