A Reading from Kyrie

Ellen Bryant Voigt’s reading from Kyrie in The Virginia Center for the Book at the Library of Virginia is excerpted from A Teleconference with Ellen Bryant Voigt, ca 1996. The teleconference was introduced by Mary Flinn, then director of New Virginia Review, Inc., now a Blackbird Senior Editor. Following the reading of Kyrie, Voigt interacted with students from Chatam, Fairfax, and Richmond, Virginia schools.

An excerpted transcript of Flinn’s introduction to the reading and teleconference follows.

Ellen [Bryant Voigt] is in Richmond as a visiting professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Department of English, and this is the first in a series of teleconferences with Virginia writers of distinction presented by New Virginia Review and The Virginia Center for the Book in celebration of the opening of The Virginia Authors’ Room at the new Library of Virginia.

This series is made possible by special funding from the Lannan Foundation and the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust.

The Virginia Center for the Book located at the Library of Virginia is an affiliate of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, and its mission is to foster a greater awareness and appreciation of books and reading and the literary heritage of Virginia.

New Virginia Review is a statewide not-for-profit organization dedicated to the cultivation and development of informed audiences for literature through publication, education, and promotion.  bug
