Marilyn Nelson is the author of more than twenty books of poetry. Her books for young adults include A Wreath for Emmett Till (Houghton Mifflin, 2005) and Carver: A Life in Poems (Front Street, 2001), a Newbery Honor Book. Her collections for adults include The Fields of Praise: New and Selected Poems (1997), winner of the 1998 Poets’ Prize, and The Homeplace (1990), winner of the 1992 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, both from Louisiana State University Press. Nelson has also translated the works of Halfdan Rasmussen, Inge Pedersen, Euripides, and Phil Dahlerup. She is the recipient of multiple honors and awards, including the Robert Frost Medal, the NSK Neustadt Prize, and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Poetry Prize, as well as fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Nelson is a professor emerita of English at the University of Connecticut, former poet laureate of the state of Connecticut, and served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. She is the Poet-in-Residence of the American Poets Corner at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.
