Lee Smith’s new novel On Agate Hill, appeared fall 2006 from Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill. She is the author of nine previous novels from Putnam including, Oral History (1983), Fair and Tender Ladies (1988), The Devil’s Dream (1992) , and Saving Grace (1995), as well as three collections of short stories. Her ninth novel, The Last Girls (Algonquin, 2002), was a New York Times bestseller as well as co-winner of the Southern Book Critics Circle Award. She is a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers and the recipient of an Academy Award in Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999. Smith is a graduate of St. Catherine’s School and Hollins College. She lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
