Artist's Statement

The Self-Portrait Project is one of my most ambitious projects; it is also my first video piece. In this project, which I started November 2001, I repeat the process of drawing myself every day with a pencil—like keeping a diary—and the next day I erase it and draw myself again. Eventually, the drawing paper will wear out. I take photos of every drawing and collect the eraser debris. The final piece will consist of the following three parts: the worn paper, erased completely; the eraser debris placed in the shape of my profile on the floor below the paper; and the animation made from the photos of the drawings.

I hope that I see things in a new way as I reconsider the relationship between the "I" and "the world." With regard to such an exploration, humor is always the key word. Ultimately, what I expect in my work is that I (and my viewers) see something new in the mundane, something perpetual in the ephemeral, and something different in the familiar wandering relationship between reality and its interpretation.
