As “Anise,” Anna Louise Strong (1885–1970) published satirical, avant-guarde protest poetry daily in the Seattle Union Record from 1918 to 1921 under the header“Ragged Verse.” The same year her poem “When the SUFFRAGE law . . .” is republished in The Crisis, Strong was in Russia with the American Friends Service Committee to help with relief during the Russian famine of 1921–1922. A political activist and journalist, Strong is best known for her support of, and writings about, communism in the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. She died in Beijing in March 29, 1970; her tombstone in Beijing's Babaoshan Cemetery reads “progressive American writer and friend of the Chinese people.”
