Working on a world premiere play is a dizzying experience! The playwright, the director, the designers, and the actors meet, discuss ideas and create something meaningful that has never existed before in the world! When Erin, Jenny, and Irene stressed the mentoring aspect of this project, I was hooked. I work every day with fine young women artists (at the Thomas Dale Specialty Center for the Arts), and I’m proud to call them my colleagues—even if they’re not old enough to vote! Our entire intern crew inspires me to do more and be better!
At our first meeting, the cast brought in tokens of their own personal female histories. We discovered that Debbie is proud to be a stay-at-home mother; Laine was once called “an American Barbie doll”; Melissa cherishes her Betty Crocker “Cooking for Boys and Girls” cookbook; and Courtney is a tomboy—not a Barbie doll at all—among other things. We also learned that most of us FEAR and DREAD a female boss!
On March 1, 2010, I lost a dear friend and former female boss—Margaret Furgerson Gregory. Margaret was also an artist and an amazing mentor to young women (and men) at L.C. Bird High School. I dedicate this production to her memory. She epitomized everything we hope to be as women. She celebrated the victories of others; she believed wholeheartedly in the future success of young people; and she made her friends feel special. I was lucky to have her in my life.
