Levis Remembered
David Freed, born in Toledo, Ohio in 1936, earned a BFA from Miami University of Ohio and an MFA from the University of Iowa, studying under legendary printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky. He received a Fulbright Grant in 1963, and studied at the Royal College of Art in London, England. After returning to the United States in 1964, he taught sculpture, design, and children’s classes at the Toledo Museum of Art School. In 1966, Freed began the printmaking program at Richmond Professional Institute in Richmond, Virginia, which later became Virginia Commonwealth University. His work has appeared in collections around the world, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Collection of Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Freed has guest lectured at the University of Reading, England; Central School of Art and Design (now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design), England; Brighton School of Art, England; il Bisonte, Italy; Loughborough University School of the Arts, England; University of Virginia, Charlottesville; and John Ruskin School of Drawing, England. In addition to the Fulbright Grant, Freed has received numerous awards, including the Virginia Commonwealth University Award of Distinction, the Teresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts in 2001, a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, and a Nattie Marie Jones Fellowship. He is an emeritus professor of printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University and maintains his own studio in Richmond, Virginia.
