Levis Remembered
Welcome to Blackbird’s annual Levis Remembered reading loop, which features poetry and readings by Larry Levis and introduces the eighteenth winner of the Levis Reading Prize, Sandra Lim. The prize is given by Levis’s family and VCU’s Department of English to a poet for their first or second published book. Poems from Lim’s collection, The Wilderness (W.W. Norton and Company, 2014), appear, along with a reading and a review of her book.   Larry Levis
A Reading by Stephen Dunn and Barbara Hurd
On January 29, 2015, VCU’s Visiting Writers Series hosted a reading by poet Stephen Dunn and non-fiction writer Barbara Hurd at Scott House. For the event, Hurd read a braided essay from her forthcoming book Listening to the Savage/River Notes and Half-Heard Melodies (University of Georgia Press, 2016) entitled “Listening to the Same River Twice: Theme and Variations.” Pulitzer Prize winner Dunn read from his fifteenth collection of poems, Lines of Defense (W.W. Norton, 2014).   Stephen Dunn
A Reading by Jennifer Grotz
On March 19, 2015, also in the Visiting Writers Series, Jennifer Grotz read poems from her forthcoming book, Window Left Open (Graywolf Press, 2016). She read as well from translations of work by French poet Patrice de la Tour du Pin, some of which originally appeared in Blackbird and which are collected in her book Psalms of All My Days (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2013). Grotz is the author of two other collections, The Needle (Houghton Mifflin, 2011) and Cusp (Houghton Mifflin, 2003), which received the prestigious Bakeless Prize in 2003.   Jennifer Grotz
A Reading by Erin McGraw & Gregory Donovan
The Visiting Writers Series at VCU concluded the 2014–15 season with a reading from Gregory Donovan and Erin McGraw on April 23, 2015 at Scott House. Erin McGraw, author of three novels and three collections of short stories, read selections from her collection-in-progress, American Lives. Blackbird’s senior editor and VCU professor Gregory Donovan read selections from his new book of poetry, Torn From the Sun (Red Hen Press, 2015).   Erin McGraw
A Reading by Charles Wright
Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner Charles Wright opened the Marcia Powell Festival of Religion and the Arts with an intimate reading of poems from his most recent book Caribou (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2014). At the time of the reading, April 9, 2015, Wright was the U.S. Poet Laureate. A technical problem with the sound system in the room proved fortuitous as Wright recited poems and told stories without the aid of a microphone as the audience sat on the floor around him.   Charles Wright
