BENJAMIN S. JONES | Deployable Structures & Selected Work
Preface
Benjamin S. Jones’s Deployable Structures is
the second in our continuing series of commissioned works of art by outstanding
artists in the early stages of their careers. His VR sculptures, created
in QuickTime, also mark the first publication of virtual sculpture in Blackbird.
Of his work, Jones writes that he “borrows from the worlds of design,
architecture, engineering, urban planning and popular culture.”

Deployacble Structures 2, (still capture) |
Deployable Structures 1 and 2 , though entities native to the screen, nevertheless invite a kind of tactile investigation as viewers move and zoom the virtual constructions using mouse and keyboard, and call into question issues of materiality and immateriality of sculpture in virtual space.
