G.K. WUORI  |  Wendy’s Friend

Characters and Setting

The setting for the play is the foyer and great room of a very elegant and very American mansion—the home of a retired executive, Herbert Longfellow. The front door is at the rear of the set toward stage right, and the rest of the set opens out onto the foyer and great room. It is not necessary to divide the foyer from the great room, but a set of double doors stage left would suggest entry to the rest of the house. Painted, impressionistic flats suggesting wainscoting, sconces, and art work can convey the impression of wealth.

WENDY’S FRIEND
An immigrant maid in her twenties for the retired Mr. Longfellow

WENDY
An immigrant maid in her twenties for Mr. & Mrs. James Dolly

MR. LONGFELLOW’S DAUGHTER
A woman in her thirties, the only heir of Mr. Longfellow

HERBERT LONGFELLOW
A quite distinguished-looking man in his late sixties, very articulate, occasionally quite confused

MRS. JAMES (ALEXANDRA) DOLLY
A woman in her thirties and Wendy’s employer

Character Note
Wendy and her friend will speak with a foreign accent. Since they are both from the same country, the two accents should be similar: a combination of pronunciation and grammatical miscues, with the emphasis on grammatical miscues so as not to lose the audience with too many garbled phrases. The cast should feel free to experiment with the script in this manner. Their country of origin is never specified.  bug
