Elizabeth King is an artist whose work combines moveable figurative sculptures with stop-frame animation in works that test the boundary between actual and virtual space. King is represented by Danese Gallery in New York, and where her next solo show is forthcoming in 2013. Her work is in permanent collections nationwide, including at the Hirschhorn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. King is the author of two books, the forthcoming A Machine, a Ghost, and a Prayer: The Story of a Sixteenth-Century Mechanical Monk, a study of a Renaissance automaton written with W. David Todd, and Attention’s Loop: A Sculptor’s Reverie on the Coexistence of Substance and Spirit (Harry Abrams, 1999). She has received numerous fellowships and awards, including a 1996 Bunting Fellowship, a 2002 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and a 2006 Arts and Letters Award for Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. King earned a BFA and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.  She was Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth College in spring 2008. She is a professor in the Department of Sculpture and Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University.
