KEVIN HAMILTONDepartment of RhythmanalysisKevin Hamilton produced the virtual sculpture, Department of Rhythmanalysis: On Location, specifically for this issue of Blackbird, following two related gallery installations, Department of Rhythmanalysis: Krannert and Department of Rhythmanalysis: DuPage. Contributing editor Joshua Eckhardt puts Hamilton's virtual work in the context of these installations, which appeared respectively at the University of Illinois’ Krannert Art Museum and College of DuPage’s Gahlberg Gallery. Irene Pérez provides for this suite her video of the installation at DuPage. Hamilton's extension of the Department of Rhythmanalysis series to a work in Flash allows Blackird to move beyond the documentation of installation and artistic process to present the art itself as created for its native electronic space. On Location—though stored in a small black rack-mounted box in downtown Richmond, Virginia—is not merely located in this single material place. As its name implies, the interactive work, at your invitation, delivers itself via the Web to your desktop gallery.
