IN PREVIOUS ISSUES

Blackbird publishes new issues twice a year. The notion of “issue” is both a nod to the print journal and a way for us to call attention to the new work of a limited number of writers. However, publishing online allows us keep all issues available for reading, listening, and viewing. On this page, we wish to point you toward some of the content you may have missed but which still lives in our Archives. All of the following contributors also have work in his issue of Blackbird.

		Norman Dubie, v1n2, v2n1, v2n2, and v7n1 Blackbird began publishing Norman Dubie’s book-length futurist poem, The Spirit Tablets at Goa Lake, with “Book of the Jewel Worm” in v1n2. The other two sections, “Book of the Jaspers” and “The Book of the Crying Kanglings,” appeared in v2n1 and v2n2 respectively. A master menu connects the sections across the three issues. Five new poems by Dubie appeared in v7n1.
		Victoria Chang, v3n2, v4n2, v6n2 Previous Blackbird appearances by Victoria Chang have included two groups of poems and a review of Circle, her first collection of poetry. In “Elegy with a Chinese Checkerboard,” published here in v8n1, Chang continues to limn her poetic landscape and explore the boundaries where experience transmutes into imagination and art.
		Claudia Emerson, v1n2, v2n1, v7n1 A review of Pinion, the second collection by poet Claudia Emerson, along with an audio interview, appeared in v1n2. In v2n1 we published four poems that were later included in Emerson’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Late Wife. Five new poems from a forthcoming collection appeared in v7n1. A reading by Emerson and an essay about her work appear in this issue.
		Philip Levine, v1n1, v3n2 The work of Philip Levine has appeared in Blackbird since its inaugural volume spring 2002. In v3n2 you can also find print and audio versions of reading the poet gave in September 2004 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as well as an audio interview conducted at VCU. Our current issue, v8n1, includes two new poems in prose by Levine.
		Christine Schutt, v1n2, v3n1 Christine Schutt’s story “Springerle” appeared in Blackbird in our first year, and she is also represented by an R.H.W. Dillard review of “Florida,” her first novel. Her story in v8n1 is excerpted from a work in progress and demonstrates her keen use of language and elision to achieve vivid effects of character and situation.

		Myron Helfgott, v1n2 Our second issue included documentation of Myron Helfgott’s exhibition “Literary Criticism.” Included were images and audio from the show and an introduction by Dinah Ryan. A companion audio interview with the artist appeared as a Feature in v1n2 aw well. The piece represented in the current issue uses audio, in the form of recorded monologues, as a major component in Helfgott’s exploration of relationships in voice, object, and memory.
