David Freed is an American artist whose work has been shown extensively worldwide, including in the following collections: the Albertina Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Charlotte, the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Public Library, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Yale University, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum of London; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Freed is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a Fulbright Grant, the World Print Competition, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, the Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts, and the VCU Award of Distinction from the Southern Graphic Council. Freed earned a BFA from Miami University of Ohio and an MFA from the University of Iowa. In 1966, Freed founded the printmaking department at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he is now a professor emeritus.
