Ms. Hicks in Spring Again
Ms. Hicks’s eyes, they say, are the confused
color of pigeon necks; thus, we are thankful
whenever she closes them, a mercy for us,
though she perhaps intends an insult. As for
departing nothing, that issue has yet to be
settled. One of those phantom girls (as you
call them) once ran all the way to the end
of where the spring boy pointed and found lo
and behold a wren’s nest in an old shed, the bird
rattling the shack with her song. Of course the girl
ran back to tell us and did so, babbling with passion
and even a note or two of the song itself. When we
turned to eavesdropping Ms. Hicks, she shook
her head and closed her eyes even tighter.
