IN PREVIOUS ISSUES

Blackbird publishes new issues twice a year. The notion of “issue” is both a nod to the print journal and a way for us to call attention to the new work of a limited number of writers. However, publishing online allows us keep all issues available for reading, listening, and viewing. On this page, we wish to point you toward some of the content you may have missed but which still lives in our Archives.

		Norman Dubie, v1n2, v2n1, v2n2, and v7n1 Blackbird began publishing Norman Dubie’s book-length futurist poem, The Spirit Tablets at Goa Lake, with “Book of the Jewel Worm” in v1n2. The other two sections, “Book of the Jaspers” and “The Book of the Crying Kanglings,” appeared in v2n1 and v2n2 respectively. A master menu connects the sections across the three issues. Five poems by Dubie also appeared in v7n1.
		Philip Levine, v1n1, v3n2, and v8n1 The work of Philip Levine has appeared in Blackbird since its inaugural volume in the spring of 2002. In v3n2 you can also find print and audio versions of reading the poet gave in September 2004 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as well as an audio interview conducted at VCU. Our v8n1 issue includes two new poems in prose by Levine. Our current issue features the audio and transcript of his keynote reading at Larry Levis: A Celebration.
		Eleanor Ross Taylor, v1n1, v7n1, and v8n2 Poems by Eleanor Ross Taylor as well as an audio interview appeared in v1n1, and poems also appear in v7n1. In v9n2, Susan Settlemyre Willams reflected on Taylor’s fifty years as a published poet and noted that, all along, Taylor's work has been characterized by "absolute originality" and a "self-directedness." Captive Voices: New and Selected Poems, 1960–2008 was published by Louisiana State University Press in 2009.
		Peter Campion, v7n1 and v8n2 Peter Campion is the 13th annual Levis Reading Prize winner for his second collection, The Lions. This issue features the Prize reading, his essay on the poetry of Larry Levis entitled "As if in the Sleep of the Other," as well as three poems including “The Lions,” originally published in v7n1. In v8n2, Ron Slate reviewed The Lions as a collection that is “richly imagined and tightly trussed, made of turbulent poems that achieve a fine, dissatisfied balance.”
		Nicky Beer, v8n1 The Diminishing House, Nicky Beer’s first volume, was published in 2010. She is featured in the Introductions Loop of issue v8n1 with an audio suite of four of her poems. That issue’s Tracking the Muse included her essay, “From Muderously to Mussel,” on the essential tools of writing. In v9n2, Beer contributes to our annual Levis celebration events with her essay, “The Inhuman Witness: Animals in the Poetry of Larry Levis.”
		James Hoch, v4n2, v6n2, v8n2, and v9n1 Poetry by James Hoch appears in v4n2, v6n2, and v9n1. In v8n2, Grant White reviewed Hoch’s second collection, Miscreants, stating that Hoch's work was a witness “the aftermath of a fractured innocence.” Hoch’s contribution to Larry Levis: A Celebration, an essay entitled “Coming Through: The Intensity and Intimacy of Levis and Caravaggio,” is included in v9n2.
		Anna Journey, v4n1, v5n2, v6n1, v8n1, and v8n2 In a v8n2 review of Journey’s If Birds Gather Your Hair for Nesting, Randy Marshall described the voice in Journey’s work as a “chorus of pseudo personas.” Her reviews have appeared in v4n1, v5n2, and v6n1, and six poems appeared in v8n2 with accompanying audio. In this issue, her essay, “Seducing the Nymph From the Tree: Larry Levis, Metamorphosis, and Elegy” is included in the Levis Remembered Reading Loop.
		Matt Donovan, v7n2 Donovan’s collection Vellum received the 11th annual Levis Reading Prize. Issue v7n2 contains his reading from the event, a conversation that touches upon the process putting together a book of poems, as well as five of Donovan’s poems. As part of the current issue, we have included his contribution to the Larry Levis: A Celebration panels, an essay entitled “Unreality & Real Distress: Ekphrasis and Emotion in the Poems of Larry Levis.”
		David St. John, v1n1 This year, David St. John opened Larry Levis: A Celebration with a reminiscence of his friendship with Levis and a reading that spanned from his own early work to new, unpublished pieces. The audio and transcript of this reading appear in this issue. Blackbird’s premier issue included four of St. John’s enigmatic poems, including “Zuni Ring,” a contemplative study of our connection to the material world.
		Richard Carlyon, v1n1, v4n2, v5n1, and v8n1 “In other words, the emphasis is on discovery.” Blackbird’s first issue presents an introduction, extensive interviews with Carlyon, and his video “Flight Song.” Memorial retrospectives, interviews, and essays on the esteemed artist and his prolific work are included in v4n2, and v8n1, and Carlyon’s family contributes a video in memoriam in v5n1. An early work utilizing a collection of vintage images, “Postcards to Aix” appears in the current issue’s Gallery.
		Tracking the Muse, v9n1 Since 2007, we have asked contributors featured in our Introductions Loop to provide us with some insight to their creative process. The latest installment features three poets and three short fiction writer discuss how the happenstance and anguish of revision contribute to the magic and hard work of creative expression. Enjoy commentary by Jocelyn Cullity, Melody S. Gee, Zachary Mason, Airin Miller, Joanna Pearson, and Sara Quinn Rivara.
